If you have a ProctorU exam coming up, two things are worth knowing in advance: how the model differs from the automated tools you may have used before, and what a sensible setup looks like so that ordinary life does not get mistaken for something else.
What ProctorU is
ProctorU is a remote proctoring platform used by universities and credentialing bodies to supervise exams taken away from a test centre. It now sits within Meazure Learning, which describes itself as a full-service test development, delivery and proctoring provider, operating since 1997 and holding a patent for remote proctoring.
That corporate detail matters less to you than the model does. What distinguishes ProctorU in practice is the presence of a human in the process.
Live proctoring vs automated proctoring
Remote proctoring comes in three broad shapes, and they behave very differently when something ordinary happens.
Automated tools record the session and let software mark anything unusual for review afterwards. Consistent and scalable, but poor at context: looking away to think and looking away to read produce a similar signal. Proctorio is the clearest example.
Lockdown-only tools do not watch you at all; they restrict what your computer can do. Respondus LockDown Browser prevents rather than detects.
Live proctoring puts a person on the other end. A human can usually distinguish a cough, a housemate or a dropped connection from an attempt to cheat — the exact judgement automation struggles with. The trade-off is that humans can be distracted or miss things, and being watched in real time is more uncomfortable for many people.
How to prepare for a ProctorU exam
Most problems in proctored exams are avoidable setup problems, not integrity problems. Getting this right removes almost all of the risk of an awkward conversation later.

Do the equipment check in advance rather than at the scheduled start. A failed webcam five minutes before an exam is a genuinely stressful way to begin, and it eats time you will want later.
What proctors are actually watching for
The honest framing is that a proctor is looking for the same things an invigilator in a hall looks for: another person involved, unauthorised material, a second screen, or someone leaving in circumstances that do not fit the rules of the exam.
What they are not doing is scoring your nerves. Fidgeting, looking away to think, muttering, stretching and glancing at the ceiling are all ordinary human behaviour during a hard exam, and a live proctor sees a great deal of it every day.
Can ProctorU see your screen, your hands, or other devices?
These three come up more than any others, and each has a different answer because each depends on a different sensor.
Your screen. Proctored sessions are designed around visibility of what you are doing in the exam, and screen visibility is a normal part of that. The precise configuration depends on the service level your institution bought, which is why your exam instructions are the authoritative source rather than a general article.
Your hands. Whatever the webcam frames can be seen by a proctor. Many exam setups ask you to position the camera so your working area is visible, precisely so that hands and desk are in shot. If your hands leave the frame repeatedly, that is the kind of thing a human may ask about — usually with a simple request to reposition, not an accusation.
Other devices on your WiFi. No. Proctoring software runs on the computer taking the exam; it does not enumerate your home network or inspect other people’s devices. A phone or tablet becomes relevant only if the camera sees it or the microphone hears it. This is a persistent myth and it is worth being clear that the network-scanning version of it is not how these tools work.
Why institutions use remote proctoring at all
It is easy to read proctoring as pure suspicion, but the institutional reasoning is usually more mundane, and knowing it makes the experience less personal.
Access. Remote proctoring is what allows an exam to be sat from home at all. Before it existed, the alternative for a distance student was travelling to a test centre, which excluded a lot of people for reasons of cost, distance, disability or caring responsibilities.
Scheduling. It removes the need to assemble everyone in one room at one time, which is what makes flexible and international cohorts practical.
Credential value. For professional and credentialing exams in particular, the qualification is worth something because it is hard to obtain dishonestly. Institutions protect that on behalf of everyone who holds the credential, including you once you have it.
Why students cheat — and why it is worth understanding
This is not an endorsement, and it is not a lecture. Understanding the pressures is genuinely useful, because most of them are addressable before an exam rather than during one.
Fear is the most common driver — of failing, of losing funding, of disappointing family. It tends to peak in people who have most to lose, which is also why the consequences of being caught fall hardest on exactly those students.
Being underprepared, often for reasons outside anyone’s control: illness, work, caring, a term that got away. The honest alternative here is almost always better — most institutions have extension, deferral and mitigating-circumstances processes that exist precisely for this, and using one carries no penalty.
Competition, where a cohort is graded relatively and the stakes feel zero-sum. And simple convenience — the exam is at home, the internet is right there, and the perceived risk feels low. It is worth knowing that the perceived risk is usually the least reliable part of that calculation.
What institutions do to deter cheating
Proctoring is only one layer, and often not the most effective one. Randomising question order and drawing from larger question banks reduces the value of a shared answer key. Writing questions that require applying a concept rather than recalling a fact makes lookups far less useful. Being explicit in advance about what is permitted — calculator, notes, scratch paper — removes the grey areas that produce most disputes.
For students, the practical read is that the exam has probably been designed on the assumption that shortcuts exist, which is usually a good argument for preparing properly instead.
What the exam itself is like
Knowing the shape of the session removes most of the anxiety, because almost all of the unfamiliar parts happen before the exam actually starts.
Before. You connect at your scheduled time and go through setup: an equipment check, identity verification with photo ID, and an environment check where you are typically asked to show your desk and the room with your camera. This part is procedural and it is the same for everyone. Budget time for it — it is not part of your exam time, but arriving late for it eats into the session.
During. Once the exam opens, it is mostly just an exam. You are expected to stay in frame and follow whatever rules your institution set about materials and breaks. If something goes wrong technically, there is a route to support built into the session, and using it is normal rather than suspicious.
After. You submit and the session ends. If anything was noted, it goes to your institution rather than being resolved on the spot, which is why you may hear nothing at all either way for some time.
Practical things that reduce problems
A short list, all of it within your control, and all of it addressing the things that actually generate awkward conversations.
Tell people you are taking an exam. The most common disruption in a home exam is another person walking in. A note on the door solves an entire category of problem.
Read the permitted-materials list first. Most disputes are about ambiguity — whether a calculator, scratch paper or a formula sheet was allowed. Knowing before you start, and showing permitted items during the environment check, removes the ambiguity entirely.
Keep your working in frame. If you are allowed paper, use it where the camera can see it. Working that happens off-camera is the thing most likely to look odd on review.
Report problems as they happen. A reported disconnection is a technical incident with a timestamp. An unreported one is an unexplained absence, and the two are read very differently afterwards.
Do a full dry run. If your institution offers a practice session or a system check, take it days ahead rather than hours. It surfaces driver problems, permissions prompts and bandwidth issues while there is still time to fix them calmly.
If something is raised about your session
Neither ProctorU nor a proctor decides an outcome. Observations go to your institution, and your institution’s academic-integrity procedure governs what follows — including, in almost every case, a right to respond.

Can ProctorU detect a phone or another device?
Anything visible to the camera or audible to the microphone can be noticed by a proctor. A second device used out of frame is not directly detectable by the software, which is part of why the environment check happens before the exam starts.
What happens if I am flagged?
