Most pages answering this question describe a monitoring system ALEKS does not have. The confusion is understandable — students meet ALEKS and Respondus in the same sitting and experience them as one product — but separating them answers nearly every version of the question.
What ALEKS tracks natively
ALEKS is an adaptive learning platform. McGraw Hill describes it as “constantly adapting to update each student’s knowledge state,” guiding students to what they are ready to learn next. To do that at all, it has to record a lot about how you work: which problems you attempted, what you answered, how long you took, and how your mastery of each topic changes over time.
That is a rich dataset — but it is pedagogical, not investigative. It exists to place you correctly in a learning sequence. It contains no webcam, no microphone, no view of your desktop, and no record of anything happening outside the ALEKS window.
How ALEKS assessments work — and why it matters here
ALEKS does not work like a normal quiz platform, and that shapes what an instructor notices. McGraw Hill describes it as research-based and adaptive, built over 25 years, covering maths, chemistry, statistics and more, with students reaching mastery more than 90% of the time.
The practical consequence is that ALEKS is continuously modelling what you know. Every answer updates its estimate of your knowledge state, and the next problem is chosen from what that model says you are ready for. It is not sampling your ability once and grading it — it is maintaining a running picture.
That running picture is exactly why an ALEKS conversation about integrity tends to start differently from a Canvas one. On a normal quiz the suspicion usually begins with a timestamp. On ALEKS it more often begins with a shape: mastery that moved in a way the model did not predict. The system is not accusing anyone — it is reporting the mismatch it was built to report.
Why unusual progress gets noticed
If an instructor raises something about your ALEKS work, it is worth knowing the ordinary reasons a pattern looks unusual, because most of them are not misconduct.
Pace. Working faster than the model expects is the most common trigger, and the most common innocent explanation is prior exposure — you have seen this material before, in another course or another year, so topics the model treats as new are actually revision for you.
Working off-screen. Doing the algebra on paper and entering only the final answer compresses your visible time per problem dramatically. The model sees a fast correct answer; it cannot see the page of working next to your laptop.
A genuine breakthrough. Adaptive systems are built around the idea that mastery arrives in steps rather than smoothly. A topic clicking is a normal event, not an anomaly.
None of these are proctoring signals. They are learning-analytics observations, and they are answerable with a straightforward account of how you worked.
Where detection actually comes from: Respondus
ALEKS’s own support site is the clearest evidence here. Its Respondus page offers two separate setup checks — one for LockDown Browser and one for Respondus Monitor (Webcam) — which tells you they are distinct layers an institution can enable independently. Respondus, from the other direction, lists McGraw Hill ALEKS among the systems Monitor integrates with.
The distinction matters enormously for what is possible:
- LockDown Browser restricts your computer during the assessment. It does not record you.
- Respondus Monitor adds webcam recording on top, with flagged events sent to the instructor for review afterwards.
- Neither — a plain ALEKS assignment with no proctoring layer at all, which is how most ordinary homework runs.

One practical note from ALEKS’s requirements page: LockDown Browser is a real installation, available for Windows, Mac, iPad and Chromebook, and it needs permanent space on the hard drive. If you did not install anything, you were not running it.
What ALEKS can and cannot detect
The honest answer to almost every “can ALEKS detect X” question is a pair of answers, because it depends entirely on whether Respondus was in play.

Notice the pattern in the right-hand column: the entries are mostly “blocked,” not “detected.” LockDown Browser is a prevention tool. It removes the ability to do the thing rather than watching for it and reporting you afterwards — which is why so much advice about “getting caught” misunderstands how these exams actually work.
Can ALEKS detect switching tabs?
Plain ALEKS does not monitor your tabs. It is a web application delivering adaptive problems; it has no proctoring layer watching what else your browser is doing.
Under LockDown Browser the question changes shape entirely. Respondus disables task switching, removes browser menu and toolbar options, displays the assessment full-screen so it cannot be minimised, and prevents the assessment from being exited until it is submitted for grading. There is no tab to switch to. That is not detection — it is prevention, and the difference is the whole answer.
VPNs, mouse movement, screen sharing and calculators
These four come up constantly and deserve a straight answer rather than a confident guess. Plain ALEKS detects none of them, because it has no proctoring layer to detect anything with.
Screen sharing is the clearest case: Respondus states that LockDown Browser prevents access to other applications including screen-sharing, virtual machines and remote desktops. Those are blocked from running, not flagged after the fact.
VPNs and mouse-movement tracking are different. Neither McGraw Hill nor Respondus publishes documentation confirming that either is detected, so any page giving you a definite answer is asserting something the vendors have not stated. We would rather tell you the evidence does not exist than invent it.
A physical calculator sits outside every one of these systems. No software on your laptop can see your desk; only a webcam pointed at the room could, and only if Monitor was enabled. Whether a calculator is allowed at all is a question for your exam instructions.
What your instructor sees
In ALEKS itself, an instructor sees learning and assessment reporting: progress and mastery by topic, assessment results, and time spent. That is the point of an adaptive system — the reporting exists so teaching can be targeted.
If Respondus was used, proctoring results are a separate artefact reviewed after the exam. Respondus describes Monitor as fully automated, with flagged events and results made available to the instructor for further review — meaning no one is watching live, and a person makes the judgement afterwards.
If you are asked about an ALEKS assessment
Because ALEKS produces detailed learning data, questions here often start from progress that looked unusual rather than from a proctoring flag. Both are conversations, not verdicts.
Ask which system the concern comes from — ALEKS reporting or Respondus proctoring — because they mean different things and carry different evidence. Ask what specifically looked wrong. If it is pace, there are ordinary explanations: you had covered the material before, you worked problems on paper first, the topic clicked. If it is a Respondus flag, ordinary explanations are equally common — someone entered the room, you read a question aloud, the connection dropped.

What actually happens if it goes further
Neither ALEKS nor Respondus decides anything. Software produces reports; institutions decide. That distinction is the single most useful thing to hold onto if a conversation about an assessment becomes formal, because it tells you where the process really lives — in your school’s academic-integrity policy, not in a piece of software.
In practice, most cases begin informally: an instructor asks about an assessment or a flagged session. Many end there. Where a concern is escalated, virtually every institution has a written procedure with defined stages — notification of the allegation, a chance to respond, a decision, and usually a route of appeal. Asking which stage you are at, and requesting the policy in writing, is a normal and reasonable thing to do.
Outcomes vary enormously by institution and by seriousness, from a conversation and a redo, through a mark penalty on one assessment, up to formal findings for repeated or severe cases. What is consistent is that a first, explicable incident is treated very differently from a deliberate pattern — and that a software flag on its own is evidence to be examined, not a finding.

Going in with the facts of how you worked — your paper working, your prior exposure to the topic, what was happening in the room — is usually more useful than a general denial.

Can ALEKS detect cheating?
ALEKS by itself has no proctoring features. It is an adaptive learning system, so what it records natively is learning data — your answers, your timing, how your knowledge state changes. Actual cheating detection comes from Respondus LockDown Browser or Respondus Monitor, which ALEKS supports as an integration and which your institution has to enable.
Can ALEKS detect switching tabs?
Plain ALEKS does not watch your tabs. If your exam runs in Respondus LockDown Browser, tab switching is not detected so much as prevented — Respondus disables task switching and blocks access to other applications during the assessment.
Does ALEKS use your camera?
Only if your institution enabled Respondus Monitor, the webcam layer. ALEKS’s own support page lists “Respondus Monitor (Webcam)” as a separate setup step from LockDown Browser, which tells you they are distinct things that can be enabled independently.
Does ALEKS record you without permission?
No. Any recording comes from Respondus Monitor, which requires installation and a pre-exam webcam check. You would know: your browser or operating system has to ask for camera access, and it cannot be granted silently.
Can ALEKS detect a VPN, screen sharing, or mouse movement?
Not natively — ALEKS has no proctoring layer to do it with. Under Respondus LockDown Browser, screen-sharing and remote-desktop applications are blocked from running at all. Neither ALEKS nor Respondus publishes a public list confirming VPN or mouse-tracking detection, so treat confident claims about those as unverified.
Can ALEKS tell if you used a calculator?
ALEKS cannot see your desk. A physical calculator is outside any software’s reach unless a webcam is recording the room. Whether one is permitted is a question for your instructor’s exam instructions, not for the software.
What does my instructor actually see in ALEKS?
Learning progress and assessment results — mastery by topic, time spent, and how your knowledge state changed. That is what an adaptive system is built to report. If Respondus was used, proctoring results are reviewed separately, after the exam.
What happens if I’m flagged?
Any flag comes from Respondus, not ALEKS, and it goes to your instructor for review rather than producing an automatic penalty. Your institution’s academic-integrity procedure governs what follows, and it should include a right of reply.
