Most articles on this question answer it with opinion. There is a better source available, and almost nobody quotes it: the company’s own legal terms take a position on cheating, in plain language, in the middle of an otherwise dry document.
What Photomath’s own terms say
Section 1 of the Terms of Service — the introduction, before any of the usual clauses about liability and termination — contains this:
“We wish to remind you that the Photomath Application is an educational tool and should be used as an aid and learning tool. Using it for cheating on exams or homework will primarily hurt you, as you will not properly learn math and math thinking. Be smart and use it only for your advancements in math learning. Not cheating.”
It is an unusual thing to find in a terms document, and it settles the question of intent. Photomath LLC is not neutral about how the app gets used, and it is not claiming that scanning an exam question is fine. It says the opposite, and it makes the argument on the grounds that actually persuade people — not that you will be caught, but that you will not learn the mathematics.
The product positioning matches. Photomath describes itself as designed for learning, with step-by-step explanations and “extra how and why tips,” and tells users to “check out each step to make sure you understand the solution.”
So is it cheating or not?
The tool is not the thing that decides. Your instructor’s instructions are. The same scan can be ordinary studying in one class and a violation in another, and that is not a loophole — it is how academic-integrity rules have always worked with every study aid, from a solutions manual to a tutor.

The useful self-check, borrowed from every good maths teacher: close the app and try a similar problem. If you can, it taught you something. If you cannot, you have produced work that does not represent you — and the exam will establish that regardless of whether anyone ever detects the app.
What teachers actually say about it
The teaching profession is genuinely split, and it is worth representing that honestly rather than pretending there is a consensus.
One camp treats Photomath as a legitimate and even valuable tool — the argument being that a student stuck at 10pm with no help available is better served by a worked method than by giving up, and that instant feedback on your own attempt is exactly what a tutor provides. Some educators have argued publicly that Photomath is not cheating for precisely this reason.
The other camp points out what happens in practice: a scan-and-copy habit produces homework marks that have no relationship to what the student can do, hides the gap until an exam exposes it, and removes the productive struggle that actually builds fluency. Maths teachers report this as a real classroom problem, not a hypothetical one.
Both positions are describing the same tool used two different ways, which is the whole point. The disagreement is about student behaviour, not about software.
Can teachers tell if you used Photomath?
There is no notification, no report to your school and no detector that scans for it. What teachers notice is the work, and maths is unusually revealing because the method is visible, not just the answer.
- An answer with no working, or working that appears fully formed with no false starts
- Notation that is not the course notation — solvers format steps in their own house style, which stands out immediately against what was taught in class
- A method from a later chapter, or one the class has not covered yet
- Identical step sequences across several students, including identical intermediate rounding
- A gap between homework and timed class work — the single most reliable signal there is
- A perfect solution to a slightly different problem
That last one deserves attention because it is specific to camera solvers. The app solves what it thinks it read. Misread a minus sign, an exponent or a fraction bar, and it returns an immaculate solution to a problem nobody set — which is far more conspicuous than an ordinary mistake, because real students make errors that look like errors.
Are Photomath’s answers reliable?
For clean, well-defined problems, generally yes. The weak points are predictable and worth knowing before you trust any output:
- Recognition errors — handwriting, poor lighting or an unusual layout can be misread
- Ambiguous notation — implicit multiplication and fraction bars can parse differently than you intended
- Word problems — the difficult step is translating a situation into an equation, and that is the step a scanner cannot do for you
- Proofs and justification — questions asking you to explain or prove are not what a step solver produces
- Context, units and rounding conventions — an answer can be algebraically correct and still wrong for the question asked
Always sanity-check that the captured problem is the problem in front of you. That single habit prevents the most common failure with camera input.
How Photomath works, briefly
Understanding the mechanism explains both its strengths and its failure modes. There are three steps, and Photomath describes them itself as scan, solve, learn.
Scan. You point the camera at a problem — printed or handwritten — and the app performs optical character recognition to turn the image into a mathematical expression. There is also a smart calculator for typing a problem in directly, which is more reliable when handwriting or lighting is poor.
Solve. It identifies the problem type and applies the appropriate procedure, covering elementary maths, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and calculus. Photomath notes there may be multiple methods available for the same problem, which is genuinely useful when the class was taught one particular approach.
Learn. The step-by-step breakdown is the part positioned as the actual product, and on paid tiers it comes with visual aids and explanations of why each step follows. Photomath’s own instruction is to “check out each step to make sure you understand the solution” — which is precisely the step that gets skipped when the app is used to produce an answer rather than to learn one.
The recognition step is where most errors originate, and it is the reason to always confirm that the expression the app captured matches the one on the page.
What Photomath costs
Worth stating plainly, because the free/paid split shapes how students use it. Photomath lists a Basic tier at $0, and a paid tier at $9.99 billed monthly or $69.99 billed annually, with the annual option marked as best value. The paid tiers advertise step-by-step explanations, custom visual aids and extra “how” and “why” tips.
Prices change and vary by region, so treat those as indicative and check in the app before subscribing.
For parents and teachers
The question worth asking is not whether the app is installed — it is when it gets opened. A student who attempts a problem, gets stuck, checks the method and then reworks it is doing something genuinely useful. A student who photographs every question and copies the output is not, and the arrangement will fail at the first timed assessment.
For teachers, the responses that hold up tend to be structural rather than prohibitive: grade the method and the reasoning rather than the final answer, ask students to explain a step in words, use short low-stakes in-class checks so homework performance can be verified, and set problems where the modelling is the work — because translating a real situation into an equation is exactly what a scanner cannot do.
