Is Using Mathway Cheating? (Where the Line Actually Is)

Short answer: Using Mathway to check an answer or see a method is not cheating. Copying its steps into graded work you were told to do yourself is. The tool does not decide that — your instructor’s instructions do. One fact almost no article mentions and that changes the picture: Mathway is owned by Chegg, so Chegg’s honor-code machinery sits behind it.

“Is this cheating?” is rarely a question about software. It is a question about what you were asked to do, and almost every confusing case resolves once you separate the two.

What Mathway is and how it works

Mathway is a maths problem solver that has been running since 2003 and advertises over 5 billion problems solved. You enter a problem — typed into its equation editor, or captured with the camera in the app — pick the topic area, and it returns an answer along with the working.

Coverage runs well beyond algebra despite the name most people know it by. The solver handles basic maths, pre-algebra and algebra, trigonometry, precalculus and calculus, statistics, finite maths, linear algebra, chemistry and graphing. In practice it is strongest where a problem is well-defined and procedural — solve for x, differentiate this, factor that.

The commercial model is the part that shapes how students actually use it: the answer is free and the steps are paid. Enter a problem without a subscription and you get the result; the worked step-by-step explanation sits behind Mathway’s premium tier. That split is worth noticing, because it means the free product is optimised for exactly the use — getting an answer without a method — that causes integrity problems, while the part that actually teaches you something costs money.

The fact that reframes this: Mathway is Chegg

Mathway presents as an independent algebra solver, and most write-ups treat it that way. Its own site says otherwise. The footer on every page reads “© 2003–2026 Chegg Inc. All rights reserved”, and it links directly to Chegg’s Honor Code, Academic Integrity and General Policies pages. Mathway’s About page points advertisers to Chegg.

This matters for a practical reason. An earlier version of this page said Mathway could not report to colleges because it was not crawled and kept user data internal. That framing treated Mathway as a standalone company with its own private policies. It is a Chegg property operating under Chegg’s published academic-integrity commitments — and those commitments include a formal channel for institutions.

What Chegg’s honor-code process actually does

Chegg publishes this openly, and it is far more specific than the rumours that circulate about it. Professors and official representatives of a college or university can open an Honor Code Investigation. Chegg states that upon verification of the request, it provides, for each URL submitted:

  • the time and date stamp of when the question was posted
  • the time and date stamp of when the solution was posted

And: “To ensure we protect the privacy of our users, we do not share personal information as part of honor code investigations.”

So the honest answer to “does Mathway report to colleges” is not a flat no. No platform in this family sends unprompted reports about individual users, and none hands over your name. What exists is a verified-request channel that returns timing — which, for a timed assessment, can be all an institution needs, because it already knows who sat the exam.

Chegg also offers instructors Honor Shield, a free tool where an educator uploads exam questions and sets a time window; students searching those questions during that window are blocked and shown a warning. Chegg notes it “does not apply to questions available in Textbook Solutions or where question is posted outside of the set exam time frame.”

Where the line actually is

Strip away the software and the underlying principle is old and simple: graded work is supposed to represent what you can do. Everything follows from that.

The rule that settles most cases

If you are unsure, this is the version worth remembering: could you now do a similar problem with the tool closed?

If yes, the tool taught you something and functioned as intended. If no, you have produced work that does not represent you — and the practical consequence arrives at the exam, where the app is not available and the gap becomes visible anyway.

Instructors are generally less interested in whether a specific app was open than in whether the student can do the mathematics. That is also why the “will I get caught” framing is the wrong one: the most reliable detector of not having learned something is an assessment.

Can a teacher tell you used Mathway?

There is no automatic flag from the app to your school. What teachers notice instead is the work itself, and maths is unusually revealing here because the method is visible, not just the answer.

  • A right answer with no working, or working that appears from nowhere
  • Notation that is not the course notation — solvers format steps in their own house style, which stands out against what was taught in class
  • A method not yet covered, or one from a later chapter
  • A whole class producing identical step sequences, including identical intermediate rounding
  • The same student unable to reproduce any of it on a timed in-class assessment
  • Answering a slightly different question — a scan misread as a different problem, solved perfectly, but not the one that was set

That last one is worth dwelling on, because it is the most common giveaway with camera-input solvers. The app solves what it thinks it read. If it misreads an exponent or a minus sign, it returns a flawless solution to the wrong problem — and a flawless solution to the wrong problem is far more conspicuous than an honest mistake.

Are Mathway’s answers even correct?

Usually, for the well-defined algebraic manipulation it is built for. The failure modes are worth knowing, though, because trusting output uncritically is its own risk:

  • Input errors — a misread photographed expression produces a confidently wrong result
  • Ambiguous notation — implicit multiplication and fraction bars can parse differently than you intended
  • Word problems — the hard part is translating the situation into an equation, which is exactly the step a solver cannot do for you
  • Proofs and reasoning — questions asking you to justify or explain are not what a step solver produces
  • Context and units — an answer can be algebraically right and physically meaningless

Chegg’s own honor code advises cross-referencing solutions with other authoritative sources for accuracy. That is good advice generally, and it applies to any automated solver.

What about teachers and parents?

For teachers, blanket bans on solvers have mostly proven unenforceable, and the more workable responses tend to be structural: grading method and reasoning rather than final answers, asking students to explain a step in words, using in-class or low-stakes timed checks to verify that homework performance is real, and setting problems where the modelling — not the manipulation — is the work.

For parents, the useful signal is not whether the app is installed but whether it is being used before or after the attempt. A student who tries a problem, gets stuck, checks the method and then redoes it is doing something genuinely productive. A student who photographs every question and copies the output is not, and the marks will eventually say so regardless of any detection.

What your institution’s policy will actually say

Academic-integrity policies rarely name individual apps, which is why students go looking for an answer online in the first place. What they name is conduct, and the categories are consistent enough to be worth knowing.

Most policies prohibit submitting work that is not your own, obtaining unauthorised assistance on an assessment, and using prohibited aids during a test. A maths solver is not mentioned because it does not need to be — it falls under “unauthorised assistance” whenever assistance was not authorised, and outside it whenever the instructor permitted study tools.

This is why the same app can be completely acceptable in one module and a violation in the next one along, taught in the same building by a different lecturer. It is also why searching for a general ruling is less useful than reading two specific documents: your institution’s academic-integrity policy, and the assignment brief in front of you. Where those are silent or unclear, asking is quick and carries no penalty.
