Short History Of Prom

Prom is the most popular event in high school education in the United States. It’s been in existence since the early 1800s and was originally a ball thrown by universities.

The general purpose of the event was for wealthy families to show off their privilege and social standing and known as promenades.

Sometime in the late 1890s, prom moved to high schools for senior classes but was still only for graduates and their families.

Unlike now, the promenade was a tea party instead of a dance and boys wore their “Sunday best” while women wore dresses inherited from their mothers.

In the 1930s, proms became a more casual and social event for high school seniors, held in school gyms and under the watchful eye of chaperones.

The focus of the event shifted from showcasing social standing and wealth to teaching young men and women how to conform to traditional gender roles.

And by the 1950s, proms had moved to hotels and country clubs, and the most promoted part of the prom, the king and queen, was introduced as a way for classmates to judge their peers based on beauty, poise, and popularity.

In the 1970s, when white schools began to integrate, African American students were finally allowed to attend their proms. However, some white parents did not like this and organized invite-only, all-white proms.

This led to tensions and caused proms to lose their popularity as they were no longer seen as being held to a high standard.

This remained until the 1980s, which brought teen movies that put more emphasis on adolescence. The result is the huge dress-up party we all know today as prom.

Is Prom Only For Seniors

Prom is the most anticipated in high school. Seniors get to enjoy a last night of celebration with their friends. But in reality, seniors aren’t the only ones allowed to attend prom.

Some schools allow both juniors and seniors to share the prom. In this case, juniors may be allowed to handle the theme as a gift to the seniors but they cannot be crowned.

Only seniors can be crowned prom king and queen. Some schools may also allow freshmen to attend prom but only if they’re invited as a junior or senior’s date. That said, some schools may consider freshmen to be too young to attend prom with seniors.

Other high schools may also allow all students regardless of their levels (freshmen to senior) to attend and may even allow other family members to share in the students’ special moments.

The limitations are usually up to the school. Since this is a formal school event, the school can institute rules to protect students and themselves. They get to choose whether seniors should be the only ones in attendance or not.

What Year Is Prom Held

Combined junior/senior proms and separate senior proms are held at the end of senior year, right before graduation around late May or early June, while junior proms are held near the end of the school year.

So, the exact date may differ as some schools may choose to hold the event early in the spring, while others may opt to have theirs closer to the end of the school year.

Can A Freshman Go To Prom

Although prom is typically reserved for juniors and seniors, freshmen may also have the opportunity to attend as a junior or senior’s date.

That said, some schools’ policies prohibit freshmen from attending prom as they believe them to be too young (typically 14 or 15) to be dating a senior (17 to 18).

Most schools also prohibit students from inviting any dates who are 21 or older to prom. The rationale around this is to prevent anyone who can legally acquire alcohol from attending.

What Age Group Goes To Prom

Prom is typically for seniors and juniors who typically range from 16 to 18 years. After all, the typical age ranges of high school juniors are 16 to 17 and seniors are typically 17 to 18 years old. Keep in mind that these are the only ones allowed to purchase a ticket to the prom.

That said, this does not mean that all participants fall within this age range, as some freshmen (typically 14 to 15) and sophomores (typically 15 to 16) may be invited by juniors and seniors as their dates.
