The precise claim is “the largest school factor,” not “the largest factor.” RAND is explicit that many things shape academic performance — individual characteristics, family, neighborhood — and that among school-related factors, teachers matter most. Anyone quoting this as “teachers are the single biggest influence on a child” has widened it past what the research says.
The effect is still visible when students are in their late twenties
The most striking evidence comes from Chetty, Friedman and Rockoff, who linked school records to tax data and followed more than a million children into adulthood. Their findings:
- Students assigned to higher value-added teachers are more likely to attend college, earn higher salaries, live in higher-income neighborhoods, have higher savings rates, and are less likely to have children as teenagers.

Sit with the third one for a moment. That is the value of one teacher, in one year, for one classroom — and the comparison is not against a great teacher, only against an average one.
What these numbers do not say
Honest use of this research requires the caveats, and RAND states them plainly:
- The estimates are imprecise, especially for teachers early in their careers or new to a district. A single year’s value-added score is a noisy measure of one person.
- Standardized tests do not measure everything teachers are responsible for. Scores are “an incomplete window” into effectiveness. Much of what follows on this page is exactly the part the tests miss.

A teacher who notices that a competent reader has stopped volunteering answers is doing something no assessment system does on its own. Early detection matters disproportionately, because academic gaps compound: a student who misses a foundational concept does not stay equally behind, they fall further behind every term.
The response can be re-teaching, small-group work, or a referral to a specialist — but all of it depends on someone noticing first.

Almost all work is done in groups, and group work is a skill: dividing labour, disagreeing productively, carrying someone having a bad week, and being carried. AI genuinely does replace part of the job. Explaining a concept, generating practice problems, giving instant feedback on a draft, and answering a question at eleven at night are all things a language model does well, cheaply, and without impatience. A student with a good tutor-style AI has real access to something that used to require an adult’s time. Pretending otherwise is not a defense of teachers; it is a reason not to be believed.
What it does not replace maps closely onto the list above — and, tellingly, onto the parts RAND says standardized tests fail to capture:
- Noticing. An AI answers the question it is asked. A teacher notices the question a student is avoiding, or that a normally engaged child has gone quiet for a fortnight.
- Obligation. A model has infinite patience but no expectations. Much of what gets a fourteen-year-old through a subject they dislike is that a specific adult is expecting the work.

RAND draws the conclusion plainly: while a teacher has the largest per-person effect on their own students, they affect far more students indirectly than directly.
This has an honest downside, which RAND also states: it makes measurement harder, not easier. If a teacher’s students are simultaneously being affected by other teachers’ spillovers, isolating any one teacher’s contribution becomes genuinely difficult — and most current studies simply assume indirect effects are proportional to direct ones, which may not hold.
